On a lovely, sunny, autumnal afternoon, teams from DH Christie and Damhead met in the preliminary round of the Doherty Cup. In what was an evenly matched opening exchange, both teams created early chances but it was the Christie who fortunately took the lead through and own goal after pressure was applied on their defence by Harry. This was soon followed up by a second with a brilliant strike from Rory leaving the keeper with no chance driving the ball high into the roof of the net from 15 yards out. Christie continued to create chances and possibly should have gone further ahead when out of nothing, just before half time, Damhead pulled one back leaving our boys feeling a little dejected at the break.
The second half saw Christie start to dominate again with Harry and Daniel taking control in midfield and with Micah, Tommy and Conor, who the team awarded player of the match, shutting everything out at the back. The boys knew a third goal would be enough to see them into Round 1 proper and striker Harry duly popped up to head home after another defensive error. With time running out, Christie began to exploit the gaps left by Damhead as they tried to pull a goal back, but no further goals were to be registered. The boys felt a great sense of relief at the final whistle knowing that they were in a difficult match. It was great to see three boys make their debuts for the team today, with Bobby, Rory and Dylan doing nothing to let themselves down.
A big thank you to all the parents and friends who turned up today to give us support. Onwards and upwards now as we await news of who we will play in Round 1.
